Carbon Monoxide Leak Kills Bed & Breakfast Worker In Philadelphia: Reports

A man who worked at a local bed and breakfast was dead in a carbon monoxide leak in an apartment building in Philadelphia, authorities say.

Firefighters were dispatched to a residential building on the 4700 block of Chester Avenue in the city's Cedar Park neighborhood at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, Philadelphia Fire Department officials said.

There, first responders found elevated carbon monoxide readings and one person dead in the building, the department said. The victim was later identified as Francis Horst, multiple outlets have reported.

Cesar Gonzales, who runs Gables Bed and Breakfast just two blocks away, told several outlets Horst was his employee. Gonzales said he went to check on Horst after the latter did not show up to work, which was unusual for him.

Fire officials said they evacuated the building Tuesday after the high carbon monoxide levels were logged. As many as 14 residents were displaced, 6ABC reported, and authorities said they are being assisted by the Office of Emergency Management.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the untimely passing of our family member at The Gables Bed and Breakfast Francis Horst," Gonzales wrote in a tribute on Facebook Tuesday night.

"We will miss you Francis terribly. Rest In Peace. We love you."

The cause of the leak remains under investigation.
